Natureboy – Natureboy

Natureboy is the musical output of Sara Kermanshahi. Here she collaborates with Cedar Apffel and Rory O’Connor to make some truly haunting and passionate music. The self titled album is a very quiet stripped down affair with the guitar being used the most to create an acoustic and intimate feel. Sara’s voice is the star here and carries the album. In several tracks her voice is reminiscent of Courtney Love (in a good way) in that the way she wails some of the lyrics you feel the emotion in each word she sings. The entire album feels like it could be a soundtrack to movie, telling of the trials and tribulation of the main character and the struggle to find redemption and purpose in life.

Highlights on the album include Pariah which picks up the pace of the album, if only for a few minutes. Bad Dream which sounds like a track Courtney Love (again, in a good way) could have done had she actually felt and cared about the music. Dither is one of the most moving tracks on the album and has a wonderful melodic harmony throughout the entire song. Heart to fool is one of the more peppier (I use that term loosely) tracks that sound like a very slowed down Yeah Yeah Yeahs track, which give the song a familiar feel. It’s also one of the only other tracks to have drums featured. Railroad Apt is a quite reflective instrumental that is very easy to get lost in  and at a little over two minutes, it brings you back to reality almost to soon.

The nine song album clocks in at under 45 minutes but feels like it goes by faster. Fans of Grant Lee Phillips or Mazzy Star should take note. This is a must have for fans of the mellow style used here. This album tells a story and takes you on a journey. It’s a journey that, once over, you feel better for having gone through it. Moving stuff indeed.

Tracy Thorn – Love and its Opposite

Continuing where her 2007 album Out Of The Woods left off, Love and Its Opposites finds Tracy Thorn older and a little bit wiser. Whether musing on growing older alone (Singles Bar) or the troubled marriages of people around her (Oh, The Divorces) the album is full of the usual dance folk sound that any Thorn fan will love.

While a lot of the album is full of more down-tempo and somber songs, Thorn does hint that she hasn’t forgotten her dance roots. The simple but effective groove and melody on Why Does the Wind? make it one of the highlights of the album. Hormones has a mother and daughter discussing one coming into her sexuality just as the other starts to lose hers. Love and Its Opposites closes with the sad but uplifting Swimming and Tracey gives us a parting piece of advice, ‘It’s all over, so lets go on’. Letting go of the past, like her work with Everything But The Girl, is hard to do but if you move on you will see that there are promising things ahead.

This is a deeply personal album, made by and for adults. With themes of marriage, love and growing older you can almost feel the trials Throne has gone through and the advice she has to give. Like a fine wine, Tracey gets better with age. A must buy for fans and at least a must listen for those not familiar with Thorns earlier work.

Washed Out – Life Of Leisure EP

The new EP from Washed Out is full of exactly that… washed out lo-fi bliss. The title of the EP, Life Of Leisure, is very fitting as well since this will be on heavy rotation as the soundtrack to many summers. Mixing 80s synths, 90s shoegaze, often filtered vocals and the rough, raw sound of a demo, Life Of Leisure is full of promise.

The short, six track EP (clocking in around 20 minutes) goes by way too fast. It invites, and really needs, intimate listening — whether in your car for a Sunday drive or in your bedroom with the headphones on. This is one that you will get nostalgic over, as it makes you think of other times and places when things seemed a whole lot simpler. Highlights include New Theory and Feel It All Around.

While Ernest Greene, the voice and brains behind Washed Out, sounds like he’s still in the process of finding himself as an artist, I eagerly await the chance to to listen to his growing pains along the way.

Delays – Star Tiger, Star Ariel

From the start of the album opener Find A Home (New Forest Shaker) I wasn’t sure where the Delays were going with this album. With the slower tempo, lush keys and heavy reverb, to Greg Gilbert’s distinctive falsetto, it seemed that Star Tiger, Star Ariel might be more of an ambient turn for the band. That is not the case as The Lost Estate quickly launches the listener into the album with the chorus of “Why don’t you ask me to stay?! I want nobody but you,” which has a massive 80′s sound (think Def Leppard mixed with Siouxsie and the Banshees). Rhapsody again uses Gilbert’s falsetto (almost too much) in trying to get an almost ethereal feel to the song. May 45 has an almost Kitchens Of Distinction feel to it and is pure pop, while tracks like Hold Fire and Moment Gone sound like a cross between James Blunt,The Darkness and The New Radicals.

The standout track on the album is In Brilliant Sunshine which is the most “rockin’” song on the album. Another thing the song has gong for it is that, for the most part, it is lacking the over-used falsetto that is oh so present on the rest of the album. That is a good thing. It’s the only song on the album that really sound like something fresh and new.

The Delays are a talented bunch but after listening to the album several times they don’t really seem to have a sound of their own. They just spend too much time bouncing around from song to song emulating bands from their youth. Star Tiger, Star Ariel is an interesting listen with a few solid tracks but it’s been done before, and done better.

Tobacco – Maniac Meat

Maniac Meat is the sophomore effort from Tobacco, the solo project of Black Moth Super Rainbow front man Tom Fec. While the album ventures into the “Experimental” realm for most part, it is surprisingly catchy and danceable. From the first track, Constellation Dirtbike Head, you know you are in for one hell of a ride. The album grabs you and dives full on into the insane.

The use of vintage synths, pitched vocals and drum machines help give the album a very quirky sound without feeling dated. Having Beck sing on two of the tracks, Fresh Hex and Grape Aerosmith, just adds street cred to the already hipster avant-garde vibe of the album. Tom also continues musically where Beck left off on some of his earlier albums (think Mellow Gold but with more acid) so it’s fitting that he and Beck would work together.

I thought that his first album, Fucked Up Friends, was interesting but this is a case of the sequel being better than the original. It’s a wild and crazy album that is a joy to listen to.

Diego Bernal - Besides

Been listening to this for a few days now and I'm loving it. It's a great instrumental album that floats around with electronic, hip hop and latin flavor.

From his Website:

"Civil rights crimefighter by day and beat producer by night, Diego Bernal, returns with "Besides..." his follow up album to 2009's successful, For Corners. On the album, Bernal sifts through untapped and long forgotten South Texas crates to create a musical ode to the classic era of hip hop. With "Besides..." we see a more straight foward take on hip hop but the production has matured and the beats have grown more into full songs. This release is available as a very limited edition blue 7" 45 vinyl with "A Long Second" and "Blue Neon"."

See for your self!

Summer Booty 2010

I was glad to be a part of this and you can here about about the project from the organizer himself!

This the 4th annual SUMMER BOOTY mashup collection.

Since 2007 bootleg mixers have gathered to express the feeling of eternal summer through bastard pop tracks.

Each year you have taken the album to heart & listened in large numbers. As wonderful as previous SUMMER BOOTYS have been, this 2010 collection is my favorite so far.

Again & again as the tracks arrived from various points of view around the world I was stunned at the talent of the DJ's.

Thanks to all who contributed & all who gave of their time & effort in other ways. You all will be remembered.

Have the Summer of good
