"Every trilogy starts with the beginning, so what better way to start off than to introduce you to the first God of creation, Brahma. Brahma has four faces and four arms, is born in the lotus flower and is creator of this material universe. Also, at one point, Brahma meditated for 290 million years. Exactly how long it took Mumbai Science to make this first part.

Part 1 consists of two tracks. With 'Researchers', Mumbai Science experiments with chopped up vocals and 80s strings, combining them with their trademark sound (WATCHBoys Noize playing 'Researchers' @ I Love Techno). The second track, 'Commandments', is slower and strikes with its obscure, lingering bassline. Perfect for the darker corners of the club! Jonas explains,“With this trilogy, I feel like we experimented with genres like New Beat, Future Techno, Acid and Electro... In a way, I think we tried to contemporize everything we liked from our youth... We just made something we think is quite cool”.

Judging from what I have heard, I would agree that they have made something that is very cool indeed!!

"If you've been to Burning Man it doesn't *need* an explanation. If you haven't, there *is* no explanation.

Never a truer word was spoken about this annual gathering in the desert.

My own creative contribution to this epic gathering of 50,000 family members in the desert is to bring some music I've made or sourced, and aim to play the right blend, at the right time in the right place. This is my two-hour closing set from DISTRIKT, on Wednesday, early evening. With DISTRIKT being my home camp on the Playa this set meant a HUGE amount to me and I can honestly say, hand-on-heart, that there hasn't been an occasion during my 20 years or so of Djaying when I have enjoyed playing music more than this.

AutoKratz are back with two wicked dance floor fillers.

In their own words...

"The bastard offspring of their collaboration with Primal Scream and New Order was somewhat of a child prodigy. Self Help For Beginners scored international success and many ‘album of the month’ accolades.

But since then, their schizophrenic tendencies kicked back in, and the unquenchable thirst for making banging electronics returned. This has given birth to Heart Attack Man and Sucker Sirens; two tracks that embody the reason why they started making music.

They spent the summer immersed in vintage CJ Bolland, the shreds of tape that Attaque had left on the Bad Life studio floor and enough pills to fuel the Berghain for a full week.

It inspired autoKratz to propel themselves back to the vanguard of future techno. The new live show debuted last Friday night at Tunnel club in Milan, and it went off in a big way.

"It's 8am. Black Rock Desert. The previous evening had been electric. It began with a demented set of pure excess on the aptly named Purgatory Cruiser with it's Exocet flame guns and rocket-powered propane ... and then moved onto an epic, spiritual sunrise set on the Robot Heart ... and it ended up at the fabulous Nutz camp, surrounded by gorgeous Playa-friends, getting lowdown & dirty until around 11.30am.
So this is my 3-hour set, live direct and raw, as it happened. Not my typical fayre perhaps, but none of my Burning Man sets are ever 'typical', and this perhaps gives you a different angle on my musical tastes. Big up to all the Nutz who once again welcomed me with open arms "

The Horn The Hunt - Paris

The Horn The Hunt are Clare Carter and Joseph Osborne. Their second album, Depressur Jolie, was released through White Label Music on 23 May 2011.

In their own words...

“Depressur Jolie is the first pre-conceived album we’ve written together. After releasing our debut album (in 2009) and establishing ourselves as a band, we knew exactly what we wanted our next album to be about. It would be colourful and bouncy with lots of different forms and textures, but have this dark underbelly throughout. We wanted to make a big pop album – our ideal pop album – full of bold, aggressive songs that have no loyalty to any particular sound or style..” explains Clare Carter, a visual artist and who, along with Joseph Osborne, makes up the Leeds-based pop duo.

“To us the album is like a colonial voyage, all steeped in British ambition and guilt. It starts with this ship sailing out over huge waves in the opening track, then land is sighted, we go ashore on this tropical volcanic island and bump into predators and carnivorous plants - the usual adventure story. There are a few battles, lava’s flowing into the sea, coconuts are running out, you start to question why you left your home, homesickness descends.”

The Horn The Hunt first began writing and recording songs in a flat in Sandnes, Norway in early 2008. Their music has taken them on a journey – literally. During their travels the duo have been inspired by and written songs in places ranging from the frozen tundra of Greenland to a room carved into the side of a canyon in the middle of Spain, before finally settling into the bedroom studio in Leeds, where they are now based.

“When we returned to England after traveling for 3 years it felt like a huge adjustment going back to a regular job and domestic life. Like being sat in a cage made of pound coins, with loads of TVs and newspapers surrounding it. You can watch everything going on and educate yourself about things but you can’t move from your designated place,” says Clare. “I made the decision to take singing and songwriting seriously, and to start performing. It was a big scary deal to me, like a ‘coming-out’ process of being exposed, thrown into the deep end.”

From the opening few measures of ‘Sunburn’ I knew I was in for a treat. The lush ambient sounds and building beats instantly started to take me on a journey. A journey that I highly recommend you all take.

Beat Connection’s Surf Noir EP is a joy to listen to and trust me, you will want to listen to it from start to finish. The Seattle duo of Jordan Koplowitz and Reed Juenger have made an EP that is complex yet so simple. You can dance to it or simply put the headphones on and let it wash over you.

‘In the water’, ‘Wildheart’ and ‘Theme From Yours Truly’ keep the EP chugging along with down tempo house beats and smooth keys that would be perfect for any sunset beach party. ‘Fresh Touch’ starts out with echoing hand claps and fades into arppagiated synth sounds and full bass tones that give you the feeling of laying back and winding down after a long day. “Silver Screen’ is really the centerpiece of the EP. With child-like synth chords and vocals that sound like Sting, the song comes together and forms a truly moving experience. ‘Motorway’ is a nice electronic interlude (similar to something AIR might play) that leads us right into the closing track of the EP, ‘Same Damn Time’, a Vangelis-esqe track, with moody synths, crisp hand claps and minor vocoder assistance. This is an great track to listen to as you depart from the brief visit you have had with Beat Connection’s Surf Noir Ep.

This is summer on a CD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I will be anxiously waiting for more from Beat Connection as I think this is just a glimpse into what their musical future holds.

The Dears - Degeneration Street

Montreal natives The Dears are back with their fifth studio album Degeneration Street. The band has regrouped after losing members before and during the recording sessions of their last album, Missiles, and they are better for it.

As a whole, this is still a The Dears album. The brooding undertones go throughout the album, but there are so many more up-beat tunes than on their last outing. It also seems like the lead singer Murray Lightburn listened to Pulp’s back catalog before starting this album as there are influences of Jarvis Cocker throughout.

’5 chords’, the second track on the album, is one of those more upbeat tracks. As the song builds and builds Murray belts out “I will always love you” and he actually sounds happy about it. ‘Blood’ is a more driving tune that has a hint of Queens of The Stone Age while ‘Yesteryear’ has a Strokes feel to it. Both tracks show that the band is adding more variety and depth to their repertoire. In fact the whole album has an entirely more accessible “mainstream alternative” feel to it. This is not a bad thing by any means. The Dears seem to be trying to expand their fan base as well as just trying something new, and it seems to be working.

Everyone in the band does their job and then some as, from start to finish, this is a tight well played album that keeps you wanting more. They can attribute a lot of their new sound to working with producer Tony Hoffer, who has produced albums for Beck and Phoenix (to name a few) and really gets the band working together and sounding great.

For those fans of The Dears that love their tunes sad and dreary don’t worry. Tracks like ‘Lamentation’, ‘Torches’ and ‘Galactic Tides’ lean towards the old The Dears sound people are expecting to hear, with moody heartfelt vocals, fuzzy guitars and building choruses. This may not be The Dears album that some were expecting but who wants to same thing over and over again. The Dears seem to be growing and heading in a new direction and if, in the end, it helps to get their songs into the ears of more people, that’s a good thing. Fantastic stuff!
