Dont bother to resist, I'll beat you....

Well...I have been mucking about trying to find new singles for several mixes I am working on at the moment (I know, it's been ages since I did a mix) and I found a bunch of solid tracks. One very sweet one is this...

Marylin Manson - The Beautiful People (Sebastien Leger Mix)

I don't know if I will use it in a mix or not but is sure it one hell of a rockin' tune. I love the original and Sebastian Leger does an ace job of keeping the original feel while totally going all electro funk thoughout the rest of the track. I LOVE that bassline!

Here we go!

I just love Soulwax. Almost everything they do is taking electronic music to the next level. Whether it's their remix of 'Lovelight' by Robbie Williams or 'Phantom Pt. II' by Justice, they are always surprising me with some sort of sonic goodness.

Soulwax, which is headed by David and Stephen Dewaele, are an indie/electro group from Ghent, Belgium. The two are perhaps best known for their influential contributions to the bastard pop genre under the names Flying Dewaele Brothers and 2 many dj's and the landmark record 'As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 2'.

There newest remixing effort is of the classic (and one of my favs) Chemical brothers tune 'Hey Boy Hey Girl'. As usual they take the expected sounds and flip them around. This would be a great song to throw into any set!

The Duo also have a new DVD that will be out in late 2008. Soulwax: Part Of The Weekend Never Dies is a documentary into Radio Soulwax, a touring concept that for the past three years has showcased the talents of four Belgians (the other two memebrs of Soulwax, the band, are Stefaan Van Leuven and Steve Slingeneyer).

Programming and promoting, DJ'ing and playing live each and every night alongside a revolving array of their friends and some of the most exciting acts in modern music, travelling relentlessly through the four corners of the globe under the banner of 'Radio Soulwax' and recording over 120 shows with one camera in Europe, Japan, US, Latin America and Australia with acclaimed young director Saam Farahmand. The result? 2 films:

The first: Part Of The Weekend Never Dies is a documentary that captures the adulation, debauchery, ebullience, reflection, cynicism, tiredness, despair, delusion, ridiculousness, contradiction, revelation, exhaustion, homesickness of the life of a DJ/band on the road; which includes 2manydj's, Soulwax Nite Versions live footage and also features James Murphy, Nancy Whang, Erol Alkan, Tiga, Justice, Busy P, So-Me, Peaches, Kitsuné & Klaxons in behind the scenes footage and interviews.

The second is a live film that captures perfectly the blissful and beautiful sonic malevolence of Soulwax's Nite Versions blitzkrieg.

Here is a teaser for the DVD.

Rex The Dog - The Rex the Dog Show

Rex the Dog (real name: Jake Williams) has been making electronic music since the early 90`s and is now well known for making energetic electro-house music. He has remixed tracks by The Knife, Depeche Mode, Client, Mylo, The Prodigy, Röyksopp and Soulwax.

I`ve been a fan of Rex The Dog for some time now and with his new release `The Rex The Dog Show` he has secured his place in my stereo. From start to finish this is a fantastic cd which includes reworks of some classic Rex The Dog tunes like `Maximize 2008`, `Bubblicious`, `Gecko`, `Prototype`, `Heartbeats` remix (by The Knife) and `Italian Skyline` (some I was familiar with, some I was not).

Right out of the gate `Bubbilicious` is filled with sweet disco vocoded vocals, 90`s rave sounds and dreamy sythns, this is a electro-pop dream come true. Tracks like `Heartsong` show how easily Rex can hop from a thumping club track to a blissful chill out interlude. "Italian Style` (one of my favorite tracks) sounds like an updated Jean Jacques Perrey classic. `Maximize 2008` is full of rave stabs and driving kicks and should get any clubber off his ass and on the dance floor. There are also a couple of remixes included here such as the cover of Jose Gonzalez`s cover of The Knife`s `Heartbeats` (the one from the Sony Bravia adverts) and `Tony the beat` by The Sounds that showcase the Rex The Dog style people have come to love.

The most interesting thing to me is that while listening to this album you can`t exactly pin down when it was made. It could have been in the early 90`s or now. This will really help the album hold up over time. My only complaint is that half the tracks on the album are too short, although that fact made it easier to hear the whole album again as I currently have the CD on repeat.

Joan as Police Woman - To Survive

Joan Wasser , lead singer for Joan as A Police Woman, is a violinist and singer/songwriter. She spent time with the band 'The Dambuilders' in the mid 90's and has performed and done studio work with the likes of Lou Reed, Tanya Donelly, Sheryl Crow, Sparklehorse, Dave Gahan, Elton John, the Scissor Sisters and Rufus Wainwright (who has a guest spot on the albums last track). In May of 1997, her boyfriend at the time, musician Jeff Buckley, drowned accidentally, in Memphis, Tennessee. He had written the song "Everybody Here Wants You" about her. She then bounced around between bands for a few years and then in February of 2004, Rufus Wainwright asked her to join his band, tour and open the shows with her new project, Joan as Police Woman. She then went on to release the acclaimed album 'Real Life" in 2006.

'To Survive' is Joan's second studio album under the current moniker and her best to date. The album is inspired by the death of Joan's mother from cancer (she definitely has plenty in her life to draw inspiration from). The whole album is very somber, with 'Magpies" (with great subtle use of horns!), 'Hard White Wall' and 'Furious'(one of my favorite tracks on the album) being the most upbeat tracks on the album. The rest, such as 'Honor Wishes', 'To Be Lonely' and 'To Survive' (which uses soft strings to accent her voice) are emotionally haunting tracks with deep and meaningful lyrics about acceptance, love and life lessons learned. When asked about the album she said "I've become obsessed with taking stuff out, leaving only the most important elements in place. I got more into blending and integration and subtlety. I just want to be courageous enough to feel and express as much as possible and that means ALL the emotions." With the album mainly focusing on Joan's voice and piano (and a few more instruments here and there), I believe she has done just that.

This is a wonderful album with loads of depth and emotion. This will most definitely be on my top 10 list of albums of the year. Highly recommended.
