Their name may mean ‘newcomers’ in Hawaiian, but Malihini sounds nothing like a new band struggling to find their sound. In fact, the duo sound so in tune with each other everything appears to be effortless, like they are an old married couple and know exactly what to do and when to do it.
The couple I refer to is Giampaolo Speziale and Federica Caiozzo. They met by chance in early 2015 while in Rome and, in what Federica describes as a "moment of surrender", decided to start making music together on a road trip through Austria, Germany, and Poland. The duo gathered thirty improvised musical ideas and spent eight days recording with their friend and drummer Alberto Paone in a Roman studio.
Here is the absolutely stunning result.
